Characteristics of Different Types of Tarpaulins

Tarpaulins, usually referred as tarps are big sheets that are quite flexible and has various purpose like protection of cargo, covering load, temporary shelters, etc. Tarpaulins have various properties and features like they are water resistant, corrosion resistance, and many other. Tarps provide protection against rain, wind, sunlight, or any other harmful weather conditions. They can also be used at construction site. There are different types of tarps available like Canvas tarps, Hay tarps, Heavy duty mesh tarps, etc. Each tarps has its own advantages and are used for different types of works. At the corners, tarps have grommets so that they can be easily tied down.

Here, we have mentioned the types of tarps along with its characteristics.

1) Canvas Tarps:

Canvas tarps are generally used in flatbed trucking or trailer because they are breathable and less abrasive. So, if the load that is carried is moisture sensitive then these canvas tarps are very useful because of their breathable property. Mostly tarps are made up of polyethylene or polypropylene but canvas tarps are made up of cotton that makes it environment friendly as they will get decomposed easily. Canvas tarps are suitable for snowy and windy conditions because they are slip resistant and heavy. These tarps are easy to handle and store after it is used.

Characteristics:

  • Water Resistant: Canvas tarps are coated with wax that repels water and makes it water resistant. It is not waterproof because of its breathable property.
  • Double Stitched: The seams of canvas tarps are double stitched that makes it strong and reduces the chances of tearing. It provides strength and durability.
  • High Quality: The quality of these tarps is very good as they provide resistance against snow, wind, rain, and sunlight. They are also made up of cotton that makes it strong.

  • 2) Steel Tarps:

They are used to cover the cargo or load that is made up of steel or metal like wires, sheets, etc. It protects the load from corrosion and rust. They are available in large size so you do not require too many of them as one is enough to cover the load. They are lightweight hence it becomes easy to handle and maintain them. Steel tarps are very durable and you can use them for any kind of load because of its big size. These tarps also provides the facility of double fastening that is usually not available in other tarps.

    Characteristics:

  • Corrosion Resistance: Steel tarps are corrosion resistant that makes these tarps more durable and a preferred option when the load is made up of steel or other metals that are prone to corrosion.
  • Waterproof: Steel tarps are waterproof and that is the main reason it provides resistance against corrosion you can save your outdoor furniture from the rain and moisture as well.
  • Heavy Duty: They are versatile and can be used for any type of loads because of its size and durability.

  • 3) Hay Tarps:

Hay Tarps are used to protect the bale of hay from weathering. With the help of hay tarps you can store the bale where they are. There is no need to move them as it can be a difficult and hefty task. Hay tarps saves up your storage space and it provides protection against wind, rain, and sunlight. These tarps are lightweight, durable and they can withstand strong winds. They are available in various sizes, so it becomes easy to protect the bales that are small or large. You can use these tarps indoors and outdoors without worrying about the weather. If they are maintained properly then you can use them for a longer period of time.

    Characteristics:

  • UV Resistance: Hay tarps cover the bale of hay outdoors and they have to withstand sunlight and harmful UV rays. Hence, they are made from sun blocking technology that protects the bale from getting damaged.
  • 100% Waterproof: They are waterproof as they cover the bale during snowy and rainy conditions also you can use this tarps for camping and travelling. Moisture can be dangerous and can damage the bale of hay. Hence to avoid it hay tarps are made waterproof.
  • Durable: Hay tarps are made up of heavy duty polyethylene that makes it UV resistant and long lasting. The hems are reinforced with double stitched webbing that makes it more durable.

  • 4) Mesh Tarps:

They are specifically created to allow the passage of air. Mesh tarps provides shade and gives protection from windblown leaves and debris. They are also used to cover the fences. You can store equipment that continuously needs air.  Mesh tarps are made up of nylon threads.

    Characteristics:

  • Abrasion Resistance: It is one of the most important features for safety of the tarp as it is constantly in contact with the load. Mesh tarps are abrasion resistant that makes the tarps long lasting.
  • Light Weight: Mesh tarps are light weight and easy to use. You can store and maintain them easily because of this feature.

  • Tarps have various advantages and they are used for securing loads in a flatbed truck and trailer. They are used at construction sites to secure the equipment. Tarps are also used as temporary shelters to provide more comfort and safety.
